Remakes
The original Malayalam film Manichithrathazhu was consecutively remade in several other languages and still found success in the respective regional cinemas. Chandramukhi is the second remake of Manichithrathazhu after the Kannada version, Aaptamitra, which was also directed by P. Vasu. Rajmohol (2005) in Bengali and Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2008) in Hindi followed later on. Below is a character map of the lead characters in the story of Manichithrathazhu and its remakes.
Controversy
Though the movie was a remake, the story was not credited to original writer Madhu Muttam, instead the story was credited to the director P. Vasu himself.
Also, Music director Gurukiran was not credited for the song "Raa Raa" which he had composed for the Kannada version Apthamitra
Similarly themed films
Chandramukhi talks about Split Personality Disorder, also known as Multiple Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder. However, this was not the only film in Tamil to deal with MPD. Other stories that have MPD in their plots include:
Anniyan
Marmadesam
Kadhal Kirukkan
Shock
Other films that portrayed characters with psychiatric/neurological problems include
Ghajini
